Lacombe sets the French metropole within a digestive schema, where rag pickers, chiffonniers, perform the disjunctive functions at the cell wall, the city limit from which the film takes its name. By depicting what poet Henri Michaux would come to call ‘life in the folds’, Paris is understood according to the ‘characteristic asymmetry’ of living organisms, a theme taken up by philosopher of science Gilbert Simondon. La Zone illuminates and politicises this asymmetry: the intensely manual waste sorting, done ad-hoc by a named class of people, is posed against the mechanised final processing, mastered and administered by the state. The asymmetry is rendered all the more stark by the vividly humanised chiffonniers - their culture, companionship, solidarity and enjoyment silently roll over us, lavishly anticipating iconic documentary works such as Agnès Varda’s The Gleaners and I (2000). In the context of the climate crisis, fuelled by what Bernard Stiegler terms anthropic macroeconomic models, the modern day chiffonniers - highly visible, typically contracted-out municipal waste workers or incarcerated people on day release - intercede as the good angels of neganthropy, making order out of anthropogenic chaos. Yet, is the enactment of ordering, by methods bluntly unchanged since one century, merely enabling chaos?

a$S1S2 Truth, Agent, Other, Product is the second in a series of redeployments of this industrial object (previously it was cast as Platonov's Anti-Sexus, a universal masturbation device that also secures the spiritual pacification of being in a relationship). At svntos32 it was made into a different thing: a portal to the sun. The sun! That generous mother, with her infinite hospitality. But wait, barred subject.. petit a.. it hisses something. Oh sorry that is the sound of the discourse. Turn by 90° to change discourses. All the way clockwise and the sun rears up, right in the middle. You can get in, too. Let its volutes slide over your head.
